Dill (Plaza Indonesia): Colorful cafe serving all-day breakfast & casual food, with unexceptional taste

Dill looks a bit out of place at a glance; it's colorful place with strong character, in the middle of a shopping mall. In terms of design & decor, the joint looks as if it was plucked out of Senopati or Kemang and forcefully put into Plaza Indonesia. It has a very photogenic & inviting appearance.

The 'gourmet cafe', as it calls itself, serves all-day breakfast, home-made juice, pastries, cakes, specialty coffee, and all sorts of simple comfort food. They have so many things to offer, though most of the dishes are nothing new.

Lots of colors and character in the design. Wooden furnitures abound, fresh juices & pastries lined up on the counter to oogle at, and jars of specialty coffee beans are placed on shelves. Dill has a semi-open kitchen, and you can see the staff preparing some of the food & drinks.

There was a cake & pastries counter as well, serving a selection of well-known choices.

Dill has a few home-made specialties, and one of the is the juice. They even have bottled juices for quick take away. The juice reminds me of Mama Roz a lot, except maybe here it's more watered down. It's not bad really, and you can still taste the fresh fruit pieces. But I'd say you can find a few juices in the supermarket with somewhat similar taste & value.

Still, it's commendable that they have a home-made juice. Somehow it gave a sense that freshness is something Dill really upholds.

Another specialty that Dill offers is the coffee. They have jars of coffee beans (I think they're local beans) on display, so I was quite curious to try.

And oh God the coffee is very acidic. Even in an ice caffe latte, the milk couldn't tone down the bitterness & acidity of the coffee. It's personal preference, but I'm a very casual coffee drinker and I like my coffee mild. This is too bitter for me.

I am reminded of a chart that Anomali Coffee has in its branches, showing the grade of acidity for various coffee beans throughout Indonesia. I imagine the coffee beans Dill uses must be on the more acidic side.

Anyways, the main courses.

Spinach Mushroom Egg Benedict
IDR 55k

Dill wasn't exaggerating about their motto 'all-day freshness'. The mushroom, spinach, and asparagus are fresh and tasty. The egg benedicts themselves are as expected, and the yolk was properly runny.

The waffles are rather sweet, which I find rather strange at first. Just wasn't expecting a savory-sweet combination. But it's still generally nice.

Angel Truffle Mac n' Cheese
IDR 65k

The mac n' cheese was actually rather dry. I don't want my mac n' cheese to be too creamy, but this is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

And the shredded chicken that comes with the dish was rather hard to chew, which makes the whole texture combination flawed.

While it's still alright in terms of overall taste, it the truffle taste is unfortunately missing. I simply couldn't find it at all. I'm not aware of what cheese they're using, but it's not that apparent either. Quite a shame really.

Dill has a very attractive appearance about it, and the ambiance is comfortable too. You can just have a casual chat for hours here, or just sit by and wait for your companion to shop somewhere else, maybe even work here (I saw some patrons working on their laptops).

And by all means it's worth the casual visits once or twice, when you're looking for a 'different' coffee shop feel. It's modestly priced too.

But there's nothing too special that will make you a regular here. The specialty juices & coffee aren't bad, and the food options are extensive, but nothing you won't generally find in most other places.
