Someone once told me, "Anyone from the West who believes they're good at barbecues have never tasted Korean barbecue."
These pictures are from Han Gang, a widely known and common Korean BBQ franchise in Jakarta.
The
meat isn't necessarily of very high quality, and it's not the most
tender either. But it's very tasty. And most of the times that's what
matters most.
The
meat itself tastes great. But additionally, maybe it's the multitude of
seasoning that comes with the barbecued meat. You're just rarely bored
with the taste because there's so many variety of seasoning to eat the
meat with.
I particularly like the sesame oil (the golden-colored
oil in the picture, usually comes with a bit of salt in it). It enriches
the flavor of the beef and makes it saltier in a good way.
The
increasingly common Korean barbecues in Jakarta is something to be
glorified. It's a very welcome enrichment to the meat-eating scene that
were previously dominated mostly by Western steakhouses.
