That said, it still serves some good food.
And, credits to it for being able to marry two cuisines which are very distant from one another in terms of almost everything.
The restaurant even had a conveyor belt for its Padang rolls, an homage to its Japanese influence.
The Rendang Roll basically tasted like Rendang with rice. It's as simple as that. The Rendang is good, better than most Padang restaurants out there, but there's nothing groundbreaking about it.
My favorite was the oxtongue. The waitress claimed it was their favorite menu, and I believed her. The tongue are cut thin, but still maintaining the chewyness. The taste is just right.
Basically I can just eat the oxtongue and white rice here, and I'm happy already.
For dessert, I had the famous (and viral) Kue Cubit Kit Kat Green Tea. Kue Cubit (literally translates into 'pinch cake') is a favorite street food in Indonesia, and is made of a simple, milky dough.
The waitress offered a choice of doneness; half-done or full. I opted for half-done.
I have to say it's quite good. It tasted weird at first, and certainly very different from the regular kue cubit you'll find in street vendors. The green tea flavor melds well with the cake, and the Kit Kat wafer adds to some interesting texture.
Tempura Prawn. This is about the only dish I ordered with dominating Japanese influence in it.
Suntiang is a good Padang restaurant with very courageous and daring concept. There's minimum Japanese influence in the dishes, but the food they serve can't be found too easily in any other Padang restaurant. Overall worth a try.
Location: Pondok Indah Mall 2 (there is another one in Grand Indonesia)
